In the marathon distance, Abdirahman has finished top five in both Chicago and New York City and finished third at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon to qualify for his fourth Olympic team. At the 2012 London Olympics, Abdirahman had to drop out of the race due to a knee injury.
Abdihakem “Abdi” Abdirahman, a four-time Olympian, is known for his 10,000m talent and solid performances on the roads over all distances. In the 10,000m, he is a four-time U.S. National Champion (2001, 2005, 2007, 2008) and also competed in that event at the Olympics in 2000, 2004 and 2008. Abdirahman also finished seventh in the 10,000m at the 2007 IAAF World Championships and won the 2008 U.S. Olympic 10,000m Trials. Proving versatility at varying road distances as well, Abdirahman has won national titles in the 10K (2007, 2009), the 10 Mile (2009), the 20K (2011), and the Half Marathon (2012).
Known as the “Black Cactus,” Abdirahman was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, before immigrating to the U.S., where he graduated from Tucson High School and then attended Pima Community College and the University of Arizona. In 2000 he became an American citizen. While at the University of Arizona, Abdirahman finished second at the 1998 NCAA Cross Country Championships and was named the 1998 Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year.
