Career Notes:

Lanni Marchant says there have been two pivotal moments in her running career. First, she says running a breakthrough race in Rotterdam gave her the motivation to start training more frequently and become a professional runner. Second, was her disappointing performance at the 2013 IAAF World Championships when she suffered from leg cramps and finished 44th. “It was heartbreaking to have my body give out in that heat, but it ignited a fire in me that set me up for a great fall season,” says Marchant. Indeed, she returned to race with vengeance at the Toronto Marathon in the fall and established a new national record of 2:28:00. (Sylvia Rugger established the former record of 2:28:32 in 1985.) “I hope that setting the record has helped draw attention to women’s running in Canada and has inspired other girls to go after the longer distance races,” says Marchant. In 2013, she won the Hamilton Around the Bay 30K, the Murfreesboro Half Marathon, the Nashville Half Marathon in 1:12:17, the Toronto Oasis ZooRun 10K, and the Toronto Yonge Street 10K.

Personal Notes:

Marchant grew up in Canada with six siblings and started running in high school to stay in shape for figure skating. “I quickly realized I liked running a lot better than putting on dresses and having someone judge my performance,” says Marchant. She attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she earned a BA in economics and was a three-time USTFCCCA Academic All-American and a two-time NCAA All-American. Marchant then received her law degrees from the University of Ottawa and Michigan State University. She is a practicing attorney in Chattanooga, focusing on criminal defense and family law. She has trained for Boston in Kenya and Tennessee.

“Being a runner, professional or recreational, means that you are part of a community that stretches across the globe.”
