Markos Geneti made his Boston Marathon debut last year and earned a solid sixth place in a strategic race. Geneti made his debut with a win in Los Angeles in 2011 and broke the course record by almost two minutes in the stormiest day of race history. In 2012 he finished third in Dubai, where he recorded one of the fastest marathon times of the year and second in Honolulu where he finished runner-up to current world record holder, Wilson Kipsang. This year Geneti finished second at the Dubai Marathon in 2:05:13.
Geneti excelled on the track as a junior finishing first in the 3,000m in the IAAF World Youth Championships in 2001 and second in the 5,000m at the IAAF World Junior Championships in 2002. In 2004 Geneti won the bronze medal in the 3,000m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Geneti was born in Walega, Ethiopia, and trains with Mark Wetmore’s group in Addis Ababa. His training partner includes Gebre Gebremariam. Geneti is one of only a few runners who have beaten Haile Gebrselassie (2 miles, 2004) and Kenenisa Bekele (2 miles, 2005) on the track. Geneti served in the Army during the Ethiopian-Eritrean War.
