At the 2012 Olympic Games Marathon, Tatiana Arkhipova ran a conservative first half and closed fast to earn the bronze medal with only 22 seconds separating the first three finishers. Prior to the Olympics, Arkhipova had shown talent in the marathon by finishing third at the 2007 Honolulu Marathon, winning the 2009 Los Angeles Marathon and placing third at the 2011 Tokyo Marathon.
Before focusing on the marathon, Arkhipova was quite accomplished in the steeplechase, earning a silver medal in the event at the 2006 European Championships, a silver medal at the 2007 IAAF World Championships, and a fourth place finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. As a junior runner she was also competitive in long distance track events, earning a fifth in the 3,000m and sixth in the 5,000m at the 2002 IAAF World Junior Championships and first in the 10,000m and second in the 5,000m at the 2005 European U23 Championship.
Arkhipova grew up in Cheboksary, which is a city known for its elite marathon runners. At the age of 14, Arkhipova was recruited to the Sport School of the Olympic Reserve and began to specialize in the steeplechase and longer track events. She holds a degree in coaching from the Cheboksary State Pedagogical University. Arkhipova trains in Kislovodsk, Cholpon-Ata and Portugal and is coached by Mikhali Kuznetsov. After the 2012 Olympics, Arkhipova took a maternity break and is now enjoying being a full time mother to her son. “My family is my greatest inspiration and support,” says Arkhipova. “Everything I do, I do for my husband and my little son. I do my best to combine the life of an athlete with being a good wife and a mother.”
