Cutbert Nyasango is one of his country’s best runners. He made his marathon debut in Berlin, finishing 10th in 2:13:19, and has improved his personal best time to 2:09:52, which is the Zimbabwe national record. Competing on Olympic and World Cross Country and Road Running Championship teams since 2003, Nyasango’s highest individual finish was 7th at the 2012 London Olympic Games Marathon. His personal best half marathon of 1:00:26 earned him a 10th-place finish at the 2007 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. In team events, Zimbabwe finished sixth in the men’s short cross event in 2005, with Nyasango the first of his countrymen to cross the line. Nyasango represented Zimbabwe at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but did not finish in the 10,000m final, due to injury.
Nyasango trains in Spain and in Zimbabwe. He says improving his times on the track and roads is a great motivator for him, and he is a role model for young runners. “So many youngsters want to achieve what I achieved during my school days. For my country, my running has made a lot of athletes believe that everyone can run at the highest level.” Nyasango is a devout Christian, husband, and father. He says when he is not training he enjoys farming, reading motivational books, including biographies of famous people, listening to music, and watching movies.
“During the race I must put my best cards on the table and run bold.”
