Jeffrey Eggleston says, “I ran Boston in 2014 and the race was memorable for how the running community and the City of Boston came together, strengthened and unified after the 2013 tragedy. It was inspiring to witness a compatriot do the improbable and become the first American winner in 31 years. It was both motivating and humbling for me to achieve a personal best and eighth-place finish. Above all, 2014 left me hungry and excited for the prospect to return.” Eggleston was the top American finisher at the 2013 Moscow World Championships Marathon, where he placed 13th and says that is his proudest running accomplishment. After Boston, Eggleston set a personal best with a 2:10:52 runner-up performance at the Gold Coast Marathon and won the Virginia Beach, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathons. In 2013, he won the Chicago Half Marathon and finished first American at the B.A.A. Half Marathon in 1:03:41. In 2012, he won the San Francisco Half Marathon and the Woodlands Marathon in Texas, and was runner-up at the Pittsburgh Marathon. Additional career highlights include winning the 2011 Pittsburgh Marathon and the 2011 Houston Half Marathon and finishing second at the 2010 U.S. Marathon Championships. Most recently he set a personal best of 1:02:41 at the 2015 Houston U.S. Half Marathon Championships.
Eggleston says, “I’ve chosen to return to Boston because I’m seeking a breakthrough leading up to 2016 and cannot think of a more appropriate U.S. venue. I believe the championship-style racing, rolling course, and opportunity to race on home soil all work in my favor.” Eggleston started running cross country and track in high school and also was a gymnast and played soccer. He attended the University of Virginia and in 2007 graduated with a B.A. in English. After college he found success in road racing and now trains in Boulder. The 1964 Olympic gold medal sprint cyclist, Patrick Sercu of Belgium, is a relative on his mother’s side. Recently engaged to his fiancée Ali, Eggleston likes to read, cook, and travel.
“ No other marathon in the world can be referenced only by its city — because Boston put the marathon on the map.”
