An All-American while running for Princeton University, Liz Costello says her proudest running accomplishment was finishing sixth at the 2016 Olympic Trials in the 10K (32:31.8) of the personal journey it represented. After finishing 16th at the 2012 Olympic Trials 10K, she says, “I thought that I had reached my peak potential in the sport, and went on to pursue a corporate career, along with a more recreational approach to running. The preparation for the 2016 trials began in 2014 when I decided to rededicate myself to running to make a bid for a spot on the 2016 Olympic team. Although I did not make the team, the return to running, as well as life in Boston, has been incredibly fulfilling, and a decision that I know I will never regret. I have my family, friends, and New Balance, to thank for their belief and support in that decision.” Also in 2016 Costello placed ninth at the New York City Half Marathon in 1:12:35 and finished 10th at the B.A.A. 5K in 16:14. At the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games Costello placed fourth in the 10,000m in 32:53.52. Costello is coached by Olympian Mark Coogan.

“I have always enjoyed racing on the roads, and the marathon represents a new challenge that I am excited to try,” says Costello. “To debut in Boston, my home for the past two and a half years, is extra meaningful.” In 2010 Costello graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and in 2012 earned a Masters in Environmental Engineering from the University of Tennessee. She works as a sales manager for SOS, an all-natural electrolyte mix, and also tutors, volunteers at the Mosaic Boston Church, enjoys reading and dining around Boston. “Running challenges me to be patient and to be in the moment,” says Costello. “Practicing these mindsets helps me in the pursuit of other goals, as well as with other aspects of my life.”

“To me, #BeBoston means racing for my new home, in front of those friends that support me through training and life.”
